Until recently, the German capital did not have one central station, from which trains departed to all major destinations. Most trains from and to the major cities used to pass through the stations Ostbahnhof and Zoologisher Garten station. It is located in the district of Charlottenburg, on Hardenbergplatz, next to the Berlin Zoo.
Originally, the Berlin Zoologischer Garten railway station was a Stadbahn station. It was opened on February 7th, 1882. The first Berlin U-Bahn line was opened underground on March 11th, 1902. The station was rebuilt between 1934 and 1940, having expanded the track installations. It was the main station in West Berlin, and two weeks after the erection of the Berlin Wall, on August 28th 1961, the U-Bahn line 9 was opened below the initial line.
